It caused Britain and the U.S. to officially join the WW2 after their ships sunk. The series of battles took place from Sep 3, 1939 - May 8, 1945 until Germany surrendered. Finally Allies won control of the seas, allowing them to control supply transfer, which ultimately determined the war.
